Abstrakt

Echocardiography and right heart catheterization are the methods of choice to identify and to follow up patients with pulmonary hypertension. In recent years magnetic resonance imaging has gained importance with increasing temporal and spatial resolution. Especially for diagnosis and followup steady-state-free-precession sequences are important to depict and exactly quantify right ventricular geometry and function. In patients with complex congenital heart diseases phase contrast images and 4D MR angiography are essential to define shunt volumes and to image comorbidities of the thoracic vessels. Of important prognostic value has proved late gadolinium enhancement imaging, which is capable to detect areas of myocardial fibrosis. Limitations of MRI like the poor spatial resolution in peripheral lung vasculature may be overcome with future development of dedicated MR sequences.
