Abstrakt

Since the existence of chronic beryllium disease (CBD) in a list of occupational diseases in Austria, only one case has been registered and recognized as an occupational disease. This paper gives an overview of CBD and the potential causes of the rare diagnosis. CBD seems to have been not only ignored but also differential diagnosis with sarcoidosis has made its diagnosis difficult. Furthermore, increasing use of beryllium has led to an increase of employees that are potentially exposed to beryllium. The number of unreported cases can only be broadly estimated and therefore a re-evaluation of cases of sarcoidosis, as has been in Germany and Switzerland, is now also being considered in Austria.
