Mesothelioma caused by asbestos fibers in farming? H. Rohn Ärztlicher Dienst, Sozialversicherungsanstalt der Bauern Salzburg, Österreich

Abstrakt
Most of mesothelioma cancers are caused by inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers. Two cases of pleuramesothelioma were detected and recognized as an occupational disease (Nr. 27b) by the medical staff of the Health Insurance for Farmers (SVB) in Austria. In both cases the demolition of asbestos- cement roof panels was the source of asbestos exposure. The following analysis of SVB data showed further 19 cases (11 men, 8 woman, mean-age 63.2 years) of certified mesothelioma in farmers from 2001 to 2010. The Health Insurance will prove the occupational causation by detecting an exposure about asbestos fibers in the past. In addition a prevention-campaign to reduce the exposure about asbestos without using personal protective equipment has been recently started.
