Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine which inhaled allergens were prevalent in patients suffering from allergic respiratory disease in Jinan, PR China. Methods: A total of 1,589 patients, who were diagnosed with respiratory disease, underwent a skin prick test (SPT) with 20 standardized allergens. The samples were stratified on two age groups: 2 – 18-year-olds (children group, n = 627) and 19 – 60-year-olds (adults group, n = 907), and the positive reactions of both groups were compared. Results: The following eight allergens, which in prick test most often led to positive result, were: Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (57.1% positive), Dermatophagoides farinae (47% positive), Artemisia vulgaris (23.2%), Alternaria (18.4%), Locust pollen (16.9%), willow pollen (13.9%), Aspergillus fumigatus (13.5%, Candida albicans (13.5%). The sensitivity to dust mites in the children group was significantly higher than that in the adult group (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The study shows that dust mite, pollen and fungi were the three most important inhaled allergens in the region of Jinan.
