Abstrakt

Cough represents not only a reflex and a cleaning mechanism, but is a symptom of numerous illnesses. The dry unproductive cough with varying causes of cough receptor provocation can not always be treated satisfactorily with medication. Therefore, chest physiotherapy represents a further therapeutic option for the treatment of the unproductive cough. Specific techniques empower the patient to avoid or reduce the cough trigger. In addition these techniques enable the patient to actively modify the expulsive phase of their unavoidable cough. Prerequisite for the patients successful intervention is the perception of their own cough stimulus and an understanding of the underlying cause. Both the triggers and the cough can thereby be actively influenced by the patients themselves.
