Abstrakt

There is a need to use standardized protocols for methacholine testing. Protocols that were recommended by the American Thoracic Society (ATS) are difficult to realize technically in Germany. Recently, an ATS-adapted dosimeter protocol was validated which can be used with technical equipment that is commercially available in Germany and can be recommended as an alternative to the widely used reservoir tests. Specific bronchial challenge tests are more complex tests with respect to management and interpretation, and they may pose a risk to the patient. These tests are indicated predominantly for the assessment of occupational asthma. There is growing evidence that accompanying noninvasive tests like serial assessments of bronchial hyperresponsiveness or measurements of exhaled nitric oxide in exhaled air may increase test efficiencies.
