Abstrakt

The diagnosis by lung function tests gets an increasing importance concerning the evaluation of neuromuscular diseases. In addition to serial measurements of lung volumes muscles strength should also be determined to detect imminent ventilatory failure. Using portable devices it is possible to measure reliably the force of the repiratory muscles by the Psniff and the Pwhistle. For scientific issues tests, independent of the cooperation of the patient such as the measurement of the transdiaphragmatic pressure (TwitcPdi) after electrical stimulation were developed. Muscle weakness in neuromuscular disease can be recognized in an early stage when a SaO₂ decrease or PCO₂ increase is registered during sleep so that noninvasive ventilation can be introduced. The elimination of secretions can be examined and optimized by measuring cough peak flow.
