Oxygen supplementation during everyday activities in patients with COPD: Is it helpful?

Abstrakt

Dyspnea on exertion is the leading symptom in patients with COPD leading to chronic disability. A lot of studies confirmed an improvement of exercise endurance and/or intensity and a relief of dyspnea by oxygen (O2). Simple aim of our study was exploring the effect of O2 (2 l/min) on daily living activities (bending, working overhead). In a single-blind trial 40 patients with COPD bended and worked overhead in a randomized manner for one minute each with room air or with O2. The number of actions carried out per minute was noted. Both activities led to a significant drop in oxygen saturation (SaO2) without or with O2. Average SaO2 per activity time significantly raised when O2 was applied. This, however, was neither followed by a rise of actions per minute nor by a reduction of dyspnea measured by BORG scale. O2 supplementation in this flow rate for this time and for these activities is, thus, not advantageous.
