Abstrakt
In recent years, a variety of products have been introduced to the market that aim to facilitate the consumption of tobacco and nicotine – along with other plant-based or synthetic substances – and make them accessible to a broad audience through inhalation or other means. These products have been marketed with the promise of being less harmful than traditional tobacco cigarettes. While cigarette consumption has steadily declined in previous decades, at least in Western industrialized nations, it nevertheless remains one of the greatest health risks until today. Globally, 25% of all male and 5% of all female are smokers and smoking is cause of more the 1 out of 10 deaths. Therefore, the aim of this article is to provide an overview of the extent of the health damage caused by cigarette smoking, in order to highlight the ongoing need for effective tobacco control policies. It also seeks to illustrate the harm the tobacco industry is still willing to accept among users of its products, thereby placing its efforts to present itself as a provider of health services in the necessary context.
