Abstrakt

Acute kidney injury (AKI) represents a major challenge in inpatient medicine and remains the most common form of organ failure in hospitalized patients. Rather than a single disease entity, AKI is a heterogeneous syndrome encompassing diverse clinical phenotypes and underlying etiologies. Even mild stages are associated with substantially increased mortality and a heightened risk of developing or accelerating chronic kidney disease. Despite its clinical relevance, AKI frequently goes unrecognized or is diagnosed late, particularly in older adults with reduced renal reserve, in whom rises in serum creatinine occur slowly and are easily underestimated. In this context, structured early detection and prevention of AKI – both on general wards and in the intensive care unit – are of critical importance.
