Abstrakt

For patients with Barrett's esophagus, all guidelines recommend regular surveillance endoscopies. Whether such a surveillance program detects Barrett's neoplasms at an earlier stage and thus positively influences the survival of these patients is increasingly controversial. The results from the BOSS trial argue against the effectiveness of regular surveillance. In the future, biomarkers will likely be available that allow for risk stratification, so that only patients with a high risk of developing a neoplasm will be monitored regularly. Then it is also more likely that such a surveillance program will be cost-effective. Until then, however, the regular endoscopic examinations with recommended surveillance intervals recommended in the guidelines remain valid.
