Abstrakt
Malnutrition is of great significance, as it occurs frequently and has clinical implications. It is a decisive factor influencing the length of hospital stay, complication rates, morbidity, and mortality in the majority of both oncological and non-oncological diseases. Despite this clear scientific evidence, which has been known for many years, nutrition unfortunately plays only a minor role in Germany. A systematic approach to the very common problem of malnutrition – for example, through professional nutrition teams – practically does not take place in German hospitals, in contrast to other countries. This is remarkable, since the investments in nutrition teams are more than compensated for by the cost savings resulting from reduced complications. Therefore, fundamental improvements, including the introduction of a financial incentive system for professional engagement with malnutrition, must be established within the healthcare system.
