Abstrakt

Asthma bronchiale is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood and adolescence and exhibits pronounced age-dependent clinical heterogeneity. A structured classification is essential for guideline-based therapy, assessment of disease progression, and health services research. While current guidelines focus on asthma control and therapy-defined severity, the ICD-10-GM classification primarily reflects etiological forms of asthma. This paper aims to analyze the current ICD-10-GM (version 2025) in childhood in the context of contemporary national and international guidelines and to highlight its significance and limitations for outpatient pediatric and adolescent pulmonology care. The expansion of the ICD-10-GM to include a fifth digit allows for a more detailed representation of disease progression, thereby bridging the gap between clinical reality, guideline recommendations, and health care system requirements.
