Abstrakt

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is frequently accompanied by psychiatric comorbidities. These can further affect illness perception and quality of life and may negatively influence adherence and prognosis. Within multimodal rehabilitation programs, numerous interventions are employed that, in addition to their primary somatic effects, may also unfold additive psychological mechanisms of action – for example through motivational processes (enhancing participation, adherence, and self-efficacy), cognitive processes (providing knowledge, modifying illness-related beliefs), or emotion-regulating processes (reducing anxiety, improving stress management). The aim of this article is to discuss these potential additional mechanisms within the rehabilitation of patients with COPD. A deeper understanding of these mechanisms could help to more consciously consider psychological factors within existing rehabilitation programs for COPD.
