Abstrakt

On February 6, 2023, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 shook south-eastern Turkey and parts of Syria, followed by a strong quake with a magnitude of 7.5. The German organisation @fire sent an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team to the particularly hard-hit province of Kahramanmaras to locate and rescue trapped people. This report describes the rescue of a 15-year-old female patient who had developed crush syndrome with accompanying compartment syndrome after being trapped for 5 days. In extreme conditions, including unstable rubble structures, freezing temperatures, and limited resources, the successful rescue was achieved through the coordinated co-operation of the international rescue team and local forces. The report highlights the medical challenges in the post-seismic context, including the pathophysiology of crush syndrome, decision-making with limited diagnostics, and the strategic implementation of a low-impact rescue. The case analysis emphasizes the crucial role of structured interdisciplinary interventions and provides valuable insights for medical care in disaster missions.
