Abstrakt

Global warming poses significant challenges to healthcare systems. Heat causes severe health risks such as cardiovascular diseases, psychological stress, and acute conditions like heat stroke. Seniors, children, individuals with chronic illnesses, and socially disadvantaged groups are particularly vulnerable. Additionally, heat can alter the effectiveness of medications. The healthcare sector must be prepared through prevention, education, and adaptation of care services. Local heat action plans and measures such as cool living spaces, adjusted diets, and support for vulnerable groups are crucial. Such plans have existed since 2017, and in 2023, the „Health Climate Pact” was introduced to improve coordination. Model plans for hospitals structure heat protection measures based on alert levels. Given the increasing frequency of heatwaves, comprehensive and mandatory protective measures for the healthcare sector are essential to strengthen resilience and better protect the population.
