Abstrakt

The study investigates the development of the birch and grass pollen flight in Germany from 2000 to 2024, based on pollen data collected at monitoring stations within the network of the German Pollen Information Service Foundation. Significant changes in the intensity and timing of pollen flight were documented during the observation period. The period of intense pollen flight, referred to as the main pollen flight period (MPFP), began 5 days earlier for birch (Betula) in 2024 than in 2000, accompanied by a 66% increase in pollen concentration over the same period. For grasses (Poaceae), the MPFP has shortened by 13 days between 2000 and 2024, with a 4-day later start and a 58% increase in pollen concentration. These findings a) pose new challenges for allergy sufferers and their physicians, as the intensity of the MPFPs has increased, and b) underline the need for interdisciplinary approaches to mitigate the health burden associated with these shifts in pollen flight.
