Abstrakt

Pharmaceuticals are essential for healthcare, but they also cause environmental damage and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions in the healthcare sector. Apart from a few exceptions, there is a lack of information on the carbon footprint of individual pharmaceuticals. Only some manufacturers have measurable greenhouse gas reduction targets at company level. Information on pharmaceutical residues in the environment and their risks has been collected for some time and could be used by healthcare professionals as a decision-making aid through a planned environmental information system. At the regulatory level, the planned strengthening of environmental risk assessment as part of the approval process is intended to promote sustainable production practices. Some health insurance companies integrate sustainability criteria into tenders for generics, thereby creating additional incentives for producers. There is also potential for conserving resources by avoiding wastage of medicines as well as overuse and misuse.
