Abstrakt

Mast cell-mediated angioedema (AE-MC) is the most common type of angioedema, which can come isolated or together with wheals, e.g., in type 1 allergic reactions, in acute urticaria (< 6 weeks duration), or in different types of chronic urticaria (> 6 weeks duration). The most frequent cause for recurrent AE-MC, with or without recurrent wheals, is chronic spontaneous urticaria. For diagnosis in type 1 allergy reactions, skin tests and specific IgE in serum can be used. Whereas for acute urticaria no specific diagnostics is recommended, in chronic urticaria the identification of pathogenic drivers of the disease is critical for diagnosis and approaches of symptomatic therapeutic treatment approaches according to international guidelines. The latter includes the use of (high-dose) antihistamines and/or omalizumab, a human monoclonal antibody against IgE.
