Abstrakt

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have the greatest burden of deaths associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR), whereby lower respiratory tract infections are an important entity. Antibiotic stewardship (ABS) programs play a key role in combating AMR. The implementation of these programs in LMICs on a national and institutional level is therefore of utmost importance. Limited resources and fragile health systems often are particular challenges. Nevertheless, the implementation of ABS programs in LMICs is feasible. Respiratory tract infections, due to their high prevalence, are an important focus of ABS interventions targeting different aspects, such as overprescribing, diagnosis, dosing and duration of antibiotic therapy.
