Abstrakt
The introduction refers to the benefits of Thuja shrubs in hedges as windbreak, dust filter, noise protector, and so forth. Latin and German names are then explained. The two specimens of the Cupressaceae-family look very much alike. Yet, there are distinguishing features. Some of them can be identified with the naked eye such as terminal shoots, cones and the inflorences in different colors. Others become visible with the help of magnifying devices. There are two kinds of scaly leaves with resin glands. The female blossoms show ovules with micropyles and pollination drops, the male ones show pollen sacs. Under the microscope a cross-section of the resin gland the epithelium and neighbouring cell layers can be seen. Reference is made to the function of the monoterpenes in the gland. Monoterpenes are poisonous agents.
