Abstrakt

There has been significant progress in the treatment of lung cancer in recent years, based on a better understanding of the biology and molecular changes as well as the establishment of more precise therapeutic options. Molecular diagnostics, oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and immunotherapeutics enable relevant survival benefits for selected patient groups. However, for many patients, the survival time is still short, especially in the metastatic setting. With new therapeutic options, prognostic uncertainty is increasing. It is therefore important to discuss opportunities and risks of cancer therapy with patients including individual factors and preferences. Changes in the course of the disease, different patterns of metastasis in long-term treatment affect symptom load and lead to high expectations of patients regarding personalized medicine and are changing cooperation with specialized palliative care providers. Palliative care can provide significant support to patients and their relatives in complex and stressful situations. Palliative care needs should be evaluated at the time of diagnosis as well as during the course of the disease. Palliative care concepts should be included in standard care of lung cancer throughout the cancer journey.
