Abstrakt

The prognostic assessment of hypoxic encephalopathy after cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a common challenge in intensive care including communicative aspects. The cornerstone of prognosis is a differentiated examination and weighting of the prognostic parameters such as clinical findings and course, neurophysiological examinations (electroencephalography, somatosensory potentials), biomarkers, and results from computertomographic or magnetic resonance brain imaging (CT, MRI). Individual predictors alone are not suitable for a valid forecast. The prognostic categories are “definitely bad”, “probably bad”, “open”, and “serious damage unlikely”. These categories should be drawn from the synopsis of all potential predictors. Based on these four prognostic categories, decisions have to be made regarding the continuation or discontinuation of life support measures.
