Abstrakt

Ultrasound is an indispensable tool in the diagnostic work-up and therapeutic control in a variety of thoracic diseases. When compared to other radiological procedures, it offers a lot of advantages as well as additional features and should be used complementarily. Knowledge of regular anatomy as well as the common ultrasound artifacts (especially A-lines, B-lines) is crucial. Estimation of the amount of effusion, the ability to re-expand before drainage as well as the assessment of the pleural structures as the cause of the effusion are reliable possibilities. Interventions can be accompanied as real-time procedures. Contrast enhancement is a potential add-on feature. The exclusion of pneumothorax is a safe method helping both post-interventionally as well as in an emergency setting.
