Abstrakt

Economic considerations are an integral part of today’s Medicine. This also holds true for the field of Nephrology. Rising economic pressure and the ever increasing complexity of the relationship between the different players in the health economy has resulted in uncertainty and frustration. This especially applies for nurses and doctors alike. Not only do they have to tackle the enormous burden of bureaucratic workload that is allegedly aimed to improve and to measure the quality of medical processes. This results in reducing the time spent with patients. It becomes even more frustrating if essential components of care like empathy can neither be measured nor nicely put into quarterly controlling reports. Everything that cannot be measured is deemed to be not important. This article aims to summarize the relationship between different stakeholders in the medical community. It describes the consequences of increasing health economic pressure and potential reasons as well as solutions for a shortage of qualified personal in the field of Nephrology. The latter one calls not only measures to improve job satisfaction but requires us to develop new strategies such as the employment of physician’s assistants in both, in- and outpatient nephrological care.
