Abstrakt

This article offers an overview over sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in patients with craniofacial anomalies, starting from isolated cleft lip and palate reaching to complex facial anomalies. The most common cause of SDB in these patients is a multilevel airway obstruction. Central breathing disorders are also possible and other factors may also contribute to breathing difficulties. Because of the mostly multifactorial cause of SDB, patients with craniofacial anomalies should be followed by an interdisciplinary team and whenever possible polysomnography should be performed to screen for SDB, also after an intervention such as tonsillotomy to confirm its success.
