Abstrakt

Background: Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) are well-established treatments of respiratory failure. The rapid increase of prescription is e.g., justified by positive effects on quality of life and mental health. Objectives: To which extent do LTOT and NIV show adverse psychosocial side effects and thus represent possible emotional stress factors? Methods: Analysis of quantitative and qualitative studies. Comparison with clinical experiences. Results: Positive effects of LTOT and NIV and LTMV on quality of life and mental health are accompanied by undesirable psychosocial effects on patients and their carers. Conclusions: A differentiating process of diagnosis and indication for LTOT and NIV seems reasonable, taking into account psychosocial factors. In addition, adequate communication and reliable caring during the disease progress are required as well as a keen lock at the emotional burden of the carers.
