Abstrakt
The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with somatic symptoms, a reduced participation in social and work life and reduced quality of life. Many COPD patients suffer from co-morbid psychological symptoms, which reduce the quality of life even more [1, 2, 3]. Most frequently, depressive disorders [4], anxiety disorders [5] or subclinical but elevated levels of anxiety or depression symptoms [6] can be observed. This article summarizes findings about prevalence, etiology, diagnostic and treatment of psychological co-morbidities. Challenges and implications for the practitioners are being discussed. Of key importance is to identify those COPD patients who have psychological symptom distress that requires treatment. Said patients can profit from pulmonary rehabilitation, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy or patient education. The doctor-patient-communication plays a decisive role. More studies are necessary to cover this subject.
