Abstrakt

The differentiation between dyspnea of cardiac and pulmonary origin requires a structured and gradual diagnostic approach. Particularly exertional dyspnea can be assessed by diagnostic tools adapted to the patients’ complaints, like for example a cardiopulmonary exercise test. A reduced O2 pulse and aerobic capacity may indicate dyspnea of cardiac origin, a reduced breathing reserve and an increased dead space ventilation are more often associated with pulmonary dyspnea. The analysis of the flow-volume curve during the exercise test can give further information. Sometimes a right heart catheter can be helpful.
