Abstrakt

In Germany, every tenth employed person suffers from insomnia. Women report symptoms of distinct daytime sleepiness, narcolepsy, initial insomnia and morning headaches. In contrast, increasingly more men announce snoring. 11% of men and 4% of women in midlife are diagnosed with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). The substantial sex difference is explained with a high estimated number of undetected cases of women suffering from SAS. They do not admit to the negative stigma of snoring as easily as men. The risk of sleep disordered breathing in postmenopausal women is higher than in premenopausal women. Different respiratory- stimulating effects of the hormonal cycle are accountable for that, for example low progesterone levels in postmenopausal women. 74.5% of women with SAS or snoring problems relate to impaired quality of life. This fact is also accompanied by constricted job performance in 67% of women.
