Abstrakt

On the basis of the new scientific knowledge and the availability of an additional vaccine, the permanent commission at Robert Koch Institute (STIKO) updated the recommendation for pneumococcal vaccination in Germany in August 2016. In order to achieve the best possible protection, STIKO recommends sequential immunization with 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) for patients at high risk (with immunodeficiency or suppression and anatomical or foreign-body-associated risks for pneumococcal meningitis) followed by vaccination with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) in 6 – 12 months. For patients with other chronic diseases and seniors up to 60 years, the vaccination with the PPSV23 is recommended, which has to be repeated at least every 6 years, due to the lack of immunity. According to the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP) and the German Society of Geriatrics (DGG), these STIKO recommendations contradict those of the updated S3 guideline for the treatment and prevention of the community acquired pneumonia and those internationally accepted.
