Abstrakt

With increasing people with medical conditions also patients with pulmonary diseases travel more frequently worldwide. Advance planning is therefore essential to ensure the safety of those patients during the travel but also at their destination. Patients and/or their caretaker(s) are advised to book extra services with the airline, the rail or bus company, arrange for the proper insurance coverage, the adequate supply of prescription medicines, proper documentation of their illness(es) and medicines preferably in the language of the holiday destination or at least in English. Patients with pulmonary diseases requiring supplementary oxygen or non-invasive ventilation should discuss technical aspects in advance with their supplier as well as their travel agency before booking the tickets. Pre-travel testing at the chest physician will help to minimize health problems and ensure physical fitness during the journey particularly when using an airplane. In this review all those aspects will be discussed in detail and recommendations were issued.
