Abstrakt

Summary: Smoking tobacco is the most important primary risk factor for the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In pulmonary practices in Saxony and Thuringia a structured smoking cessation was implemented and evaluated, offering fully financed medical treatments for withdrawal symptoms. Method: The present study represents cases of the intervention group (n = 99) of a study center which is part of a multicenter study and answers selected questions based on standardized anamnesis, body plethysmography, exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) measurement, and questionnaires. Primary outcome is the total abstinence 12 months after treatment, verified by medical examinations and CO measurement (≤ 9 ppm). Results: After 12 weeks 61.9% (intention-to-treat, ITT: 52.5%) and after 12 months 58.5% (ITT: 38.8%) of the participants quit smoking. Conclusions: A diseasespecific smoking cessation program, which includes behavioral training, pharmacological and telephone support is practicable and obtains high und sustainable abstinence successes.
