Abstrakt

The mucociliary apparatus of the respiratory tract consists from various filigrane structures. The essential components are the mucosal glands, ciliae bearing epithelium, surface liquids covering the epithelium and endoluminal mucus. Infections and/or inflammatory processes can impair each part of this airway protecting system. The spectrum of impairment can extend from reduction of ciliar beat frequency up to denudation of the airway epithelium. Clinically, patients suffer from insufficient clearance with resulting mucus retention. In dependence from duration and severity of the infection, the mucociliary apparatus can restitute ad integrum.
