Abstrakt

According to the increasing incidence of diverticulosis by age, diverticulitis is a common disease in older patients but not in younger patients. Depending on the results of older studies, diverticular disease in young patients is considered to be more rare, but on the other hand more severe including higher rates of complications. The indication for elective surgery was proposed for these patients after the first attack of acute inflammation. In general the incidence of inflammations increased significantly in younger patients and the question results, whether the age is a risk factor for a severe course and should they undergo early elective surgery. To clarify this we use the results of studies from 1986 to 2012. Comparing the older studies they show statistic bias because of inclusion of misdiagnosis, suspected diagnosis and variant age limits. Furthermore actually techniques of percutaneous CT-drainage and laparoscopic surgery are developing further. Latest data could show that the disease is not more aggressive in younger patients. Age cannot be maintained to be a risk factor. The same applies to the severity of recurrence. Summarizing elective surgery in case of uncomplicated diverticular disease regardless of the number of episode is not be recommended.
