Abstrakt

Endurance training is regarded as a major component of exercise training programs in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This article aims to provide practical recommendations for the implementation of endurance training in COPD patients. Continuous training and interval training are the two most common endurance training modalities. Both approaches are equally effective in improving exercise capacity and quality of life. However, especially patients with severe COPD may benefit more by the use of interval training due to lower symptoms of dyspnea. Another new hype is dealing with non-linear endurance training which changes intensity and duration in each exercise session. Finally, aqua training will be discussed as an alternative exercise modality in COPD patients with comorbidities or obesity.
