Abstrakt
Cough is categorized by its duration as acute (up to 3 weeks), subacute (3 – 8 weeks) and chronic (lasting longer than 8 weeks) cough. Due to a tremendous amount of differential diagnosis of chronic cough, guidelines favour stepwise diagnostic protocols. Whereas predominantly pulmonary causes of cough dominate in smokers, a large scale of pulmonary and extrapulmonary diseases should be considered in non-smokers. However, a systematic approach is time-consuming and sometimes very costly. In contrast, diagnostic procedures may be applied according to the most common causes of chronic cough. In all cases, correct diagnosis must be proven by a successful treatment of chronic cough.
