Abstrakt

Detrimental effects of smoking in pregnancy have been recognized over half a century ago, with symmetrical growth retardation being described first [28]. The detrimental effects have now been systemically evaluated and summarized. This is a summary of the statement supported by five Austrian medical societies (Austrian Society of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Austrian Society of Pneumology, Austrian Society of General Medicine, Austrian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Austrian Society for Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine) [11]. Aim was to describe tobacco-associated detrimental health effects on the fetus using the relevant scientific evidence with a new term definition called “fetal tobacco syndrome” as well as a description of possible methods of smoking cessation during pregnancy. Despite the existence of an ICD 10 diagnosis (P04.2) entitled “detrimental health effect of the fetus due to tobacco exposure” the fetal tobacco syndrome has not been described in detail before.
