Abstrakt

Patients with chronic mental disorders are regularly impaired not only in respect to the occupational but also their social participation across all domains of life. Mental disorders have a negative influence on the social net of patients while at the same time the social net is needed in coping with illness. The social net is an important context factor according to ICF. A convenience sample of 230 patients from a psychosomatic rehabilitation unit was assessed with the “Multidimensional Social Contact Circle”, which allows to quantify the size of the social net, emotional and practical support, and social burdens. 40.8% of the patients said that they experienced almost no practical social support and 32.4% no emotional support. Patients with more psychological symptoms saw less support from workmates or friends, while close relations seem to be less susceptible. Medical and occupational rehabilitation has not only to focus on the individual patient but also on the social net across different aspects of social life.
