Doping 2012 – Recent survey with Hessian sports physicians on their experience with doping

Abstrakt
The publication of an own Anti-Doping Book in 2011, by the Sports Medical Association Hessen e.V. is an important substantive contribution to the current anti-doping fight. At the same time this nationwide antidoping initiative is sustained at the association level and qualified support. Accordingly, the multi-author work is provided free of charge to the members of the Sports Medical Association as well as to all licensed sports medical examination parts of the country’s Sports Confederation Hessen e.V. The present study investigated by means of a 1-page questionnaire with 9 items Hessian experience with sports physicians of the drug phenomenon at national level and also elicited the acceptance of the supplied report. Out of 764 members registered in the Sports Medical Association Hessen e.V. 68 (8.9%) returned the completed questionnaire (by mail, fax or e-mail). 54% of the Hessian sports medics assisted athletes. 72% of the respondents were decidedly addressed on the subject of doping, 23.5% were exclusively competitive athletes. Primarily it was a matter of pure information about drugs in general, as well as nutritional supplements, followed by questions about side effects, and the list of banned substances. In terms of sport bodybuilding dominated with 39.7% responses, followed by the marathon (14.7%). In descending order, the athletes were interested in steroids (44.1%), beta 2-agonists (17.6%), stimulants (16.2%), erythropoietin (14.7%), clenbuterol and growth hormones (each 13.2%). The most efficient doping prevention measure in the opinion of the majority of respondents were considered to be a continuation of the doping ban (73.5%), followed by stringent controls (55.9%) and awareness raising (17.6%). Outsider positions such as general release or release under medical supervision were fortunately represented by only one respondent (1.5%). 60.3% of the Hessian sports medics found themselves sufficiently informed. A remarkably high level of acceptance was found for the anti-doping book, which was sent to the participants, 70.6% of the participants expected benefits from it for the practice.
