Abstrakt
The rehabilitation of brain injuries and neurologic diseases is always a long term task due to the chronic nature of the pathology. The rehabilitation of children and adolescents with neurologic diseases differs fundamentally from the treatment necessary in adults. The developing, immature brain requires different treatment strategies and goals. Not the pre-traumatic cognitive level is the main goal, but the learning capacity to acquire new cognitive functions. However, impairment of executive functions is frequent, as trauma is the main cause of brain injury. Since it is associated with a bad long term outcome, frequently a lifelong treatment is necessary. Inpatient treatment in specialized rehabilitation units is therefore only one part of a treatment chain. Here we show rehabilitation schemes, which closely link inpatient rehabilitation and post-rehabilitation support. By using new digital media it may be possible to enhance and improve the information flow between physicians and therapists involved in the rehabilitation course. By this participation goals can be agreed upon and (re-)integration may be achieved more effectively.
