Abstract

In malignant pleural effusions talc poudrage under thoracoscopic view remains the therapy of choice. However, in numerous clinical situations alternative strategies are required. Beside the possibility of a repeated discharge puncture, for some years different systems of indwelling pleural catheter have been available which are introduced more or less in the long term in the pleural space. Information about indications and considerations to the combination of different technologies, the clinical use and effectiveness have been compiled this article. Also more and more cases of chronic, benign pleural effusion of different etiology have to be managed in stable care so that these must be considered in the discussion.
