Abstract

Pleural effusions occur as symptoms of very different diseases. The cytological analysis of effusion fluid is technically simple and yields important information for further diagnostic procedures or planning of therapy. Using adequate cytopreparation, the whole spectrum of immunhistochemistry and of molecular diagnostics can be applied to effusion fluid. This will become even more important as more patients receive molecular targeted therapy and need to be monitored concerning their mutational status. Effusion fluid is ideally suited for this application.
