Abstract

In the last years, innovations in diagnostics and therapy of lung cancer developed as rapidly as in nearly no other tumor entity. Molecular diagnostics allow defining specific groups of patients, which qualify for a targeted therapy and thus have a much better prognosis. Due to precise histological, genetic, and clinical subclassifications the spectrum of lung cancers widened extensively. Accordingly, different entities which differ clearly regarding biology and prognosis, have to be distinguished. At the same time many therapy options as (metastasis)-surgery, classical chemotherapy, radiation (including stereotaxis), tyrosinkinase inhibitors as well as immunotherapy are available. Thus, accurate diagnostics and exact staging are essential for an individual multimodal therapy. In this article we review the current standards of diagnostics and staging in lung cancers.
