Abstract

Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB) represents a common emergency situation, and is still associated with high mortality rates despite new therapeutic innovations. Beside initial resuscitation and bleeding management strategies, endoscopy is the gold standard in diagnostic and treatment of AUGIB. Therefore, it is one of the main factors in determining the patient outcome. Especially, in the last few decades significant advantages in the endoscopic management of AUGIB have been made and new hemostatic techniques have been developed. In order to achieve a safe and efficient bleeding control in different situations, it is essential to know various endoscopic techniques and procedures. Therefore this article gives a review of current management strategies of UGIB and its endoscopic techniques.
