The aim of this first edition of “Nephrology in a nutshell” is to
provide a readily accessible and concise review on the most
important aspects of clinical nephrology for daily practice.
Since it was originally derived from the nephrology chapter of
an extensive German textbook of internal medicine issued in
1999, this English version needed to be thoroughly revised,
extensively updated and almost completely rewritten.
As suggested by the title, each chapter addresses a specific renal
disorder or issue in a precise and succinct style. Major advances
in the field of nephrology such as the new staging system of
chronic renal disease defined by the National Kidney Foundation
(NKF-K/DOQI) have been included. For more detailed
information the reader will find references to extensive textbooks
of nephrology. Since science progresses fast and quickly
translates into clinical medicine, international guidelines
published online as well as frequently updated internet sources
of medical education are listed in the appendix.
The pocket-sized format makes this book an excellent companion
for everyday clinical work not only for nephrology trainees,
but also for practicing physicians of other fields, who wish to
rapidly update their knowledge on the diagnosis or management
of renal disorders.
We are confident that this nutshell will be widely cracked and
will prove to be practically useful for all those caring for
patients with renal diseases. |
